PantherBet privacy: where POPIA ends and FICA takes over
South African privacy law gives you the right to ask for your data to be deleted, but the same law makes an exception for records a separate law requires PantherBet to keep. This page explains exactly which records fall into each category and for how long.

Why POPIA's deletion right doesn't cover FICA documents
Under the Protection of Personal Information Act, PantherBet may not keep personal data longer than necessary for the purpose it was collected for, and Section 14(4) requires destruction or de-identification once the legal retention window lapses. That default is overridden wherever a separate law requires longer retention, and the Financial Intelligence Centre Act is exactly that law for a licensed bookmaker.
FICA classifies PantherBet as an accountable institution, which means identity documents, proof of address and transaction records fall outside POPIA's ordinary "delete on request" rule for as long as FICA's own clock is still running.
FICA record-keeping
Three separate 5-year clocks, not one combined countdown
FICA sets three independent triggers, each starting its own 5-year period rather than one shared timer: business-relationship records run 5 years from account closure, individual transaction records run 5 years from the date that specific transaction concluded, and any record tied to a suspicious-transaction report runs 5 years from the date that report was filed with the Financial Intelligence Centre.
In practice this means closing a PantherBet account does not start a single countdown to full deletion. A deposit made three years before closure and a withdrawal made the week before closure can each carry a different expiry date for the same account.

What happens when you ask us to delete your data
A request to access or delete personal data is processed against the categories above: marketing data, browsing behaviour and non-FICA account preferences can be deleted or de-identified on request, while FICA-covered identity and transaction records remain retained until the applicable 5-year period expires, after which they are destroyed in a manner that prevents reconstruction.
Self-excluding or closing an account under the responsible gambling rules does not shorten this FICA retention window — the identity documents used to verify that account stay on file for compliance purposes for the same 5 years as any other closed account.
